Based on theoretical calculations using the fragility concept and the nucleation theory for a model glass-forming system, we propose a dimensionless criterion, ϕ, expressed by Trg(ΔTx/Tg)a, with Trg, the reduced glass-transition temperature, ΔTx, the width of the supercooled liquid region when heating a glass, Tg, the glass transition temperature, and a, the exponent. However, phenocryst-poor rocks contain sieve-textured plagioclase, resorbed plagioclase, and opacite in which hornblendes are pseudomorphed. An additional factor contributing to such discrepancies is that thermodynamic data obtained on stoichiometric phases stable at liquidus temperatures are not appropriate for estimating the thermodynamic barrier to nucleation of the metastable crystals that actually form at large degrees of supercooling. Textural investigation of core samples reveals large (up to 1 cm in length) acicular diopsidic pyroxenes in a matrix of smaller feldspar and zoned pyroxene crystals (500 m in length). The aggregate cation radii at the M1 site does not exclusively control the stability of C2/c and P21/c polymorphs; instead valence electrons can profoundly favor the stabilization of a polymorph. Our results show that euhedral, faceted plagioclases form during isothermal and slower cooling experiments exhibiting idiomorphic tabular shapes.
